z/OS - DFSMS Implementation

Seminar Content:

Since the use of DFSMS components is already good practice in practically all data centers today, the focus of the seminar is less on implementation and more on exploiting the possibilities and maintaining an already existing environment. However, since many aspects of maintaining an environment are equally important in the context of implementing DFSMS, the course is also suitable without any restriction for participants who want to carry out an implementation for the first time. Since product innovations up to the latest DFSMS release are also addressed, the course could be useful as a refresher even for experienced connoisseurs of the subject.

The central role of DFSMS in file management on DASD and tape

• DFSMS as ordering force for managing pools of DASD volumes
• Service Level Agreements (SLA) and their implementation using DFSMS constructs
• Interactive Storage Management Facility (ISMF) as interface for the user as well as the administrator in interactive operation and as Batch job (NaviQuest)
• Automatic Class Selection (ACS) routines for automatic stamping of files according to SLA
• The SMS configuration
• System commands for controlling DFSMS
• The interaction of the components of DFSMS
• Constant innovation: New functions up to z/OS DFSMS V2.1
• Optional: DFSMS and IDCAMS DCOLLECT
• Optional: Reporting based on IDCAMS DCOLLECT and/or DFSMShsm Functional Statistic SMF Records using Report Generator
• Optional: DFSMS and RACF (z/OS Security Server)
• Optional: DFSMS and CICS/TS (VSAM Record Level Sharing)
• Optional: DFSMS and OAM
• Optional: Interaction IBM Memory Hardware with DFSMS

The optional topics are carried out in consultation with the participants. Due to the limited time available, other topics or the practical course may be shortened. The learned contents are deepened by detailed practical exercises with discussion of the solutions.
